ISA Certified Arborist FAQs
What does ISA Certified mean?
An arborist with ISA Certification has passed a comprehensive exam administered by the International Society of Arboriculture and maintains continuing education to keep the certification active. It's the most widely recognized arborist credential in North America. It is not the same as a contractor's license.
When do I need an ISA Certified Arborist vs. a tree trimmer?
Hire an ISA arborist for: written tree assessments, hazard evaluations, disease/pest diagnosis, preservation plans during construction, expert testimony, and complex pruning of mature/heritage trees. A licensed tree trimmer is fine for routine pruning and removal of healthy trees.
How much does an arborist consultation cost?
A typical written tree assessment runs $150–$500 in NorCal. Larger consulting jobs (construction tree-protection plans, expert reports) are billed hourly, often $125–$200/hr.
Should the company doing the work also be the one assessing the tree?
It can be, but for major decisions (remove vs. preserve a heritage oak, for example) you want an unbiased opinion from someone who isn't bidding on the work. A consulting arborist who only diagnoses — not removes — has no financial stake in your decision.
